About Appleby Archaeology
Appleby Archaeology is focused on practical, field archaeology. Most of
the Group's activities take place in the Appleby area but our interests
range across the whole of Cumbria. Members receive four Newsletters a
year and are entitled to attend the winter lecture programme free of charge.
Winter Lecture Programme and Summer Events
Winter lectures normally take place monthly between October and April each year. Summer events take the form of evening walks and weekend
excursions into the Eden Valley area and beyond. Please click the Programme
tab for details.
Training and Research
We are currently offering instruction in surveying and excavation techniques
in association with Wardell Armstrong Archaeology
through our ongoing research and project work.
In the past we have organised a biennial Summer Conference and,
wherever possible, have published Proceedings. At present we have
decided to concentrate our efforts on Research activities.
If you'd like to join Appleby Archaeology, please use our

Acknowledgment - Dig Appleby
Dig Appleby - Breaking the Ground has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to begin a project which will investigate the history of Appleby, involving local people in both research and excavation. Ultimately, the aim is to find out more than is known at the moment, to have fun while doing it and to provide a lasting legacy for the community.
